10 COMMANDMENTS FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
February 24, 2008

1. Make a list of what's hot and what's not about college life. For example, consider the academic quality of your potential college major(s), the school's religious affiliation, sports teams and extracurricular activities.
2. Consult your high school guidance counselor. Ask for suggestions of schools to check out.
3. Visit a lot of colleges and universities. At each stop, fill out the checklist you created as your first commandment. Take a tour and ask your guide and others you meet lots of questions.
4. Discuss family finances with your parents. Figure out how much they will be able to help you and how much they expect you to contribute. Talk frankly about family income, because that will influence how much financial aid you receive.
5. Always do a personal interview with someone affiliated with the school when it's offered. Research the college or university beforehand to show your interest, then ask questions. All the schools where I've interviewed have offered me at least $5,000 in aid or scholarships.
6. Start your admission essay a few months before the deadline. Ask your teachers if they'll review it for you and offer suggestions to make it better.
7. Create accounts on several online application sites that are free, quick, easy and invaluable to students. The Common Application -- Commonapp.org -- compiles all your applications into one that can be sent to any of its 315 member colleges. FastWeb --www.fast web.com -- personalizes your scholarship search.
8. Compile a flawless resume that lists your accomplishments, awards and extracurricular activities. Attach it to your applications. Make sure its design looks professional and that it's printed on clean, high-quality white or cream-colored paper.
9. Do not procrastinate. I know, I know, you always procrastinate; procrastination is your middle name. But please don't do it this time. I had applications due at the same time as my senior research paper because I didn't plan ahead. I'm pretty sure most of my hair has grown back.
10. Have fun planning your future, and enjoy your last year at home with family and hometown friends.

Rachel Troy, a student at North Central High School has applied to a dozen colleges. She is undecided.
