ARCHBISHOP BEUCHLEIN'S SCHEDULE DEFINES `BUSY'
November 29, 1993

One year after we first requested an interview with Archbishop Daniel Beuchlein (pronounced "Beek-line"), six Children's Express reporters and editors finally got to talk to the leader of 200,000 Catholics in central and southern Indiana.

It's a good thing we talked to him then. His next open appointment is in 1996.

When we talked to him at the Catholic Center in Indianapolis, Archbishop Beuchlein described himself as committed to God and the church, a forward-looking leader and someone who likes people. His office seems to reflect his personality.

Next to the picture of Mother Teresa in his red-carpeted office is the Latin document, issued by Pope John Paul II, that proclaimed him archbishop. On one wall hangs a 17th-century wooden Christus, a figure of Christ, and on a table nearby is his Eagle Scout award.

The one object in his office that you wouldn't expect to see is a computer.

But with a schedule as busy as his, Archbishop Beuchlein needs a computer to keep track of all his daily appointments, meetings and free time. He says he has no typical day, but he does have a general schedule he tries to adhere to.

"I get up about 6 a.m., and I do an hour of prayer in the morning. Then I'm usually at home to do a little work on my computer," he explained. "(Then) I get to the office. I have appointments, usually on the hour. I usually have a luncheon meeting, and I can have appointments all afternoon. (Then) I will go home and run and jog about three miles and work out."

In the evenings, Archbishop Beuchlein usually goes out, attending a board meeting, installing a new pastor, or doing another one of his many duties. "I am generally home about 10, unwind a little while, say my night prayer and go to bed."
