Children's Express has interviewed many celebrities on a variety of topics over the past year. Often, great quotes just don't make it into the stories because they don't fit our angle. We thought, however, that some of them just needed to be shared. So here they are.
Jason Hervey, actor, The Wonder Years.
If there was one law you could make, based upon your childhood, which one would it be?
"Anyone can go out and get a driver's license, right? Anyone who's 21 can drink, right? Anyone who's 18 can vote. You have to be an age for all those things, right? But any jerk can be a father. . . . I think there should be a law . . . that you're going to be a good father before you're a father."
Arnold Schwarzenegger, movie star
What advice would you give to someone who wanted to take steroids to be a better athlete?
"Never take drugs. That's my message. We have to stay away from the abuse of alcohol. We have to stay away from drugs completely. We have to stay away from smoking completely. Otherwise, we can never achieve a really healthy body because drugs are only good temporarily. For the long run you've got to put effort and training behind it to learn the discipline.
Charles Bolden, astronaut. Do you see yourself as a role model?
"Yes, I see myself as a role model. I don't look at myself as a hero or anything but I think all of you need to look at yourselves as role models.
A role model is someone who sets a good example for other people and gives people a reason to hope for things to be better, in their lives or in their own environment. Hopefully, all of you understand that by virtue of what you do you're already role models. Young people your age and younger who look up to you and say, "Boy, I'd like to be doing that. I'd like to be sitting there doing that interview.' It's pretty important to be willing to accept that particular position. It's a lot of fun.
Magic Johnson, NBA player What do you think about shoe endorsements?
Guys have been supporting shoes for years, since the NBA has been playing basketball, and nothing has ever happened. I think now people are making a big deal out of it because some people who don't have any sense of values . . . just go out there and kill somebody over a pair of tennis shoes. That doesn't make any sense.
But I think the public has blown it out of proportion in saying it's the fault of the athlete. It's not your fault if your friend hits somebody or kills somebody.
Let's say if Michael Jordan stopped wearing Nikes, people will still kill for a pair of Nikes. It's not Michael Jordan's fault. Nikes have been around a lot longer than Michael Jordan.
Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons Which Simpson resembles you the most?
It's a tough one because I just said that they're bad people. I guess I'm a little like Bart and a little like Homer. I'm a dad now myself and I have a 3-year-old son, so I understand more about what it's like being a parent now. I used to have no sympathy for parents and now that I am one I feel sorry for all of us.
John Saunders, sportscaster, ESPN
What's the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?
"I went on the air one time to do a basketball telecast and the cord (to) your microphone is really long. . . . My feet got tangled up in the cord and as I went to talk, I moved my foot and the microphone went WHAM! It fell into my lap. Then, when I bent down to pick it up, the chair fell over. . . . I collapsed on the air, and I was kind of down under the desk going, `Ahhh, we'll be back after these commercial messages.' "
