REACTION TO BLUME'S SEQUEL VARIES AMONG KIDS
`Rachel Robinson' recommended especially for girls, although story has strong boy character.
August 8, 1994

Here's to You, Rachel Robinson is Judy Blume's latest book. It is a continuation of Just as Long as We're Together, which follows Stephanie as she enters junior high and meets her friends Alison and Rachel.

Here's to You focuses on Rachel and her competitive family. Her older brother Charles has always captured most of their parents' attention, and Rachel and her older sister Jessica have enjoyed the year that he has been away at boarding school. Rachel, in particular, has earned straight As, as usual, and has taken on some more challenging assignments at school.

Their peace is shattered when Charles gets kicked out of school and starts his trouble-making again. Rachel dreads mealtime because Charles is always creating some crisis. Her friends, however, find more to like about Charles than she can.

Three Children's Express reporters read Here's to You, Rachel Robinson. Their reactions follow.

This book talks mainly about a girl's life, like when her brother had to come home from school 'cause he gets in trouble a lot. It justs talks about her life and her friends.

She gets really stressed out with her brother. She gets really mad at him and they get into some fights. They yell at each other, scream at each other, just like any normal people would do.

I think this is realistic fiction because it can really happen in life. This book brings you into Rachel's lifestyle.

I'd recommend this for any girl. It's the sequel to Just as Long as We're Together. They're teen-agers at the time of this book. Now if you wanted to read a more exciting book, you can read Just as Long as We're Together, which is when they were in junior high.

Rating 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7.

ALEX EDGECOMBE, 11

I liked the book. It's mostly about a girl going through her pre-teen years. More for a girl than a boy definitely.

I think it was kinda realistic about how Rachel thought she absolutely hated her brother and so did Jess.

I thought her friends really liked Charles for different reasons. I thought it was actually you know, more realistic that way.

I really thought Rachel had a tough life living with what I would call a dork. I certainly hope my baby brother doesn't turn out the way Charles did.

I though it was a pretty good book overall because, you know, it didn't take me very long to read.

MISTY MOORE, 11

I think the book was OK except it had a lot of foul language, but I guess that's the way Judy Blume expresses the people in her book.

I think she should have stressed more on the reasoning of Rachel Robinson for hating her brother . . . I also think that she should have stressed more on the reasons (why) Charles was there.

I think it's like a 3 or a 4.
